What Is the Training Visa Australia (Subclass 407)?

The Training Visa (subclass 407) is a temporary, employer-sponsored visa that allows you to join workplace-based occupational training or professional development in Australia. It’s meant to increase your skills in your occupation, field of study or area of expertise, not to fill a normal job vacancy.

Typical reasons to use a Training Visa Australia route:

  • Practical internship-style training for recent graduates
  • Training needed to obtain or maintain registration, membership or licensing in a profession.
  • Skill enhancement in an eligible occupation
  • Capacity-building programs for staff of overseas businesses or government agencies.

Most 407 Visas are granted for up to 2 years, depending on the training program.

Types of Training Programs on a 407 Visa

The Department of Home Affairs recognises three main training types under the 407 program:

  1. Occupational Training for Registration
    • Workplace-based training required to gain or keep registration, membership or licensing in your occupation.
  2. Occupational Training to Improve Skills in an Eligible Occupation
    • Structured training to enhance your skills in an eligible occupation where you already have some qualifications and/or work experience.
  3. Occupational Training for Capacity Building Overseas
    • Training programs that build skills for use overseas, often for employees of overseas companies or government agencies.

Visa4you helps you choose the correct stream, then align your training plan, duties and objectives, so they clearly match that stream.

Who Can Use a Training Visa Australia Pathway?

A Training Visa Australia may be suitable if you are:

  • A recent graduate needing supervised, on-the-job training
  • A professional who must complete workplace training to meet registration or licensing requirements
  • A skilled worker looking to deepen skills in an eligible occupation
  • An overseas employee joining a structured capacity-building program in Australia

It is not a general work visa. If you are already fully job-ready and your sponsor mainly needs a worker, another visa type (like 482 Skills in Demand or 186 ENS) is usually more appropriate.

Visa4you can assess whether Subclass 407 is the right tool, or whether a Student, Working Holiday or Employer Sponsored Visa fits better.

Training Visa Eligibility What You and Your Sponsor Need

To use the Training Visa Australia (407), both sides must qualify

For the trainee (visa applicant):

  • Usually 18+ years old
  • Relevant qualifications and/or work experience in the training field
  • Training must be genuinely needed for your skills or registration, not just a way to stay longer in Australia.
  • Meet English, health and character requirements
  • Show you are a genuine temporary entrant coming primarily for training, not long-term work.

For the sponsor (Australian organisation):

  • Approved as a Temporary Activities Sponsor, or has applied for that status.
  • A lawfully operating business, government body or organisation in Australia
  • Provides a structured, occupation-specific training plan with clear objectives, modules, supervision and assessment, not just a job description.
  • Shows training is consistent with its business and not a substitute for a regular employee

There is now much stronger integrity scrutiny on 407 Visas due to misuse as cheap labour and as a fallback after the 408 COVID Visa closed, and refusal rates have increased.

How the Training Visa Australia (407) Process Works

Most 407 cases follow three stages: Sponsorship, Nomination and Visa.
  1. Sponsorship – Australian Organisation
    • The organisation applies (if needed) to become a Temporary Activities Sponsor.
    • Shows it is lawfully operating and can meet sponsorship obligations.
  2. Nomination – Training Position & Program
    • Sponsor lodges a nomination for you, your role and the training program.
    • Includes the occupation, duration, training stream and detailed plan, plus evidence that training is structured and genuine.
  3. Visa Application – Trainee
    • You apply for the Training Visa (subclass 407) online, providing:
      • Passport and identity documents
      • Qualifications and work experience
      • English evidence (where required)
      • Health insurance, financial capacity and character documents.

Processing times are very variable and, with the surge in 407 usage after 408 ended, many agents report longer processing and a high refusal rate for weak applications.

Visa4you helps coordinate all three stages so sponsor and trainee are aligned.

Typical Internship & Training Visa Scenarios

A training Visa Australia route might be used where:

1

Graduate Internship:

A recent engineering graduate completes a 12-month structured training program in an Australian firm, following a schedule with rotations, mentoring and assessments not just regular employee duties.

2

Registration-Required Training:

A healthcare professional needs supervised practice to satisfy registration or licensing requirements for their profession.

3

Corporate Capacity Building:

A company’s overseas staff attend a capacity-building program in Australia, combining shadowing, project work and leadership training.

Visa4you can help shape your real-world training needs into a visa-compliant training plan.

Types of Training Programs on a 407 Visa

Choosing the right option matters:

  • Training Visa 407 best when you need structured training, licensing preperation or early-career experience and have an employer who wants to train you, not fill a fully-skilled role.
  • 482 Skills in Demand Visa for skilled workers ready for a full job; clearer pathways to long-term sponsorship/PR in many cases.
  • Student Visa 500 for classroom-based or mixed study where your main goal is an Australian qualification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most Training Visa Australia grants are up to 2 years, depending on the approved training program and your circumstances. It is a temporary visa focused on training, not long-term employment.

You must have an approved sponsor in Australia (business, government body or organisation) that nominates you and provides the training program. You cannot apply independently without a sponsor.

There is no direct PR pathway from the 407 Visa. However, the skills and Australian experience you gain may later support a Skilled Visa or Employer-Sponsored Visa if you meet their criteria.

You can work in line with your nominated occupation and training plan. The role must clearly focus on training and upskilling, not simply filling a regular job. Misuse as a workaround work visa is a key reason for increased refusals.

With the end of the 408 COVID Visa, 407 applications have surged, and authorities are targeting non-genuine and “cheap labour” cases. Common refusal reasons include weak training plans, training unrelated to the applicant’s background, unclear genuine temporary intent, or sponsors who don’t meet integrity expectations.
