It is a temporary employer-sponsored visa that lets you take part in structured workplace training or professional development in Australia to build your skills, not to fill a regular job. It is commonly used for internships, registration related training, skill development, or capacity-building programs. It can be granted for up to 2 years.

This visa has three main streams: Registration, Skill improvement and Capacity building.

Training Visa Australia

Who Can Benefit From This Visa?

A Training Visa Australia may be suitable if you are:

  • A recent graduate needing supervised, on-the-job training
  • A professional who must complete workplace training for registration or licensing
  • A skilled worker looking to deepen skills in an eligible occupation
  • An overseas employee joining a structured capacity-building program in Australia

It is not a general work visa. If your sponsor mainly needs a worker, another visa type would be more appropiate.

Visa4you can assess whether this visa or another visa is the better fit.

What You and Your Sponsor Need

For the trainee (visa applicant):

  • Usually 18+ years old
  • Relevant qualifications and/or work experience in the training field
  • Training must be genuinely needed for your skills or registration, not just a way to stay longer in Australia.
  • Meet English, health and character requirements
  • Show you are a genuine temporary entrant coming primarily for training, not long-term work.

For the sponsor (Australian organisation):

  • Approved as a Temporary Activities Sponsor, or has applied for approval
  • A lawfully operating business, government body or organisation in Australia
  • Provides a structured, occupation-specific training plan with clear objectives, supervision and assessment, not just a job description.
  • Shows the training aligns with its business and is not a substitute for a regular employee

Typical Internship & Training Visa Scenarios

    • A graduate completes a 12 month structured training program in an Australian organisation and follows a schedule with rotations, mentoring and assessments not just regular employee duties.
  2. Registration Required Training
    • A Healthcare professional needs supervised practice to satisfy registration or licensing requirements for their profession.
  3. Corporate Capacity Building

Frequently Asked Questions

Most Training Visa Australia grants are up to 2 years, depending on the approved training program and your circumstances. It is a temporary visa focused on training, not long-term employment.

You must have an approved sponsor in Australia (business, government body or organisation) that nominates you and provides the training program. You cannot apply independently without a sponsor.

There is no direct PR pathway from the 407 Visa. However, the skills and Australian experience you gain may later support a Skilled Visa or Employer-Sponsored Visa if you meet their criteria.

You can work in line with your nominated occupation and training plan. The role must clearly focus on training and upskilling, not simply filling a regular job. Misuse as a workaround work visa is a key reason for increased refusals.

With the end of the 408 COVID Visa, 407 applications have surged, and authorities are targeting non-genuine and “cheap labour” cases. Common refusal reasons include weak training plans, training unrelated to the applicant’s background, unclear genuine temporary intent, or sponsors who don’t meet integrity expectations.
