Family Sponsorship Canada

Reunite with Your Loved Ones

Through family sponsorship Canada programs, Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor close family members to become permanent residents, so they can live, study and work in Canada long term. Family sponsorship covers spouses and partners, dependent children, parents and grandparents, and in very limited cases, other relatives.

Family immigration rules are changing frequently, from reduced 2025 family class targets to updates on open work permits for spouses and new rules for the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP).

Visa4you helps you understand which family members you can sponsor, what’s currently realistic, and how to present a strong, honest application.

  • Spouse, partner & dependent child sponsorship
  • Parents & grandparents sponsorship and Super Visa options

What Is the Family Sponsorship Canada Program?

Family sponsorship is part of Canada’s Family Class immigration. If you’re a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you may be able to sponsor certain relatives for permanent residence, so they can live with you in Canada.

IRCC’s main family sponsorship categories include:

  • Spouses, common-law and conjugal partners
  • Dependent children
  • Parents and grandparents (PGP)
  • In very limited cases, orphaned siblings, nieces, nephews and g  grandchildren under 18, or other relatives when you have no remaining family in Canada .

Canada’s family class remains the second-largest immigration category, though targets have been tightened for 2025 and 2026, which can mean more scrutiny and slower processing if applications are weak or incomplete.

  Who Can Be a Sponsor?

To sponsor a family member under family sponsorship Canada, you generally must:

  • Be 18 or older.
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a registered Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
  • Usually live in Canada (citizens living abroad must show they’ll return when the sponsored person becomes a PR)
  • Sign an undertaking promising to support the sponsored person’s basic needs for a set number of years
  • Not be in serious default of previous sponsorship undertakings, certain immigration loans, child support, or recent bankruptcy
  • Not be incarcerated or convicted of certain violent or family-related offences (with some exceptions)

For parents and grandparents, you must also meet specific minimum necessary income requirements over several years.

Visa4you checks whether you qualify as a sponsor now, and if not, what you’d need to change (income history, debts, timing).

Who Can You Sponsor Through Family Sponsorship Canada?

Core groups you can sponsor include:

Spouse, Partner or Dependent Child

You can sponsor your:

  • Spouse (legally married)
  • Common-law partner (usually 12+ months of continuous cohabitation)
  • Conjugal partner (in exceptional cases where you can’t live together or marry due to barriers)
  • Dependent children (biological or adopted, under 22 and unmarried, or who meet dependency definitions due to disability)

This is the category which is the most used and provides direct routes to PR for couples.

Parents and Grandparents

Through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) you can sponsor:

  • Your biological or adoptive parents
  • Your grandparents, if they’re the parents of your parent

PGP intakes are capped and invitation-based.

Those who aren’t invited often look at the Super Visa, which allows long-term visits (up to 5 years per stay, multi-entry up to 10 years) but is not permanent residence.

Other Relatives – Limited Cases

In limited circumstances, you may sponsor:

  • Orphaned siblings, nieces, nephews or grandchildren under 18, if they are not married or in a common-law relationship
  • One extended relative (such as a brother, sister, aunt or uncle) only if you have no other close family members you could sponsor in Canada or abroad under existing categories

Visa4you can confirm whether your situation fits these rare exceptions or if another pathway is more realistic.

How Long Are You Financially Responsible?

When you use family sponsorship Canada, you sign an undertaking to support your family member for a fixed time after they become a permanent resident. During this period, if they receive certain social assistance, the government can ask you to repay it.

Typical undertaking lengths (outside Quebec) include roughly:

  • Spouse/partner: 3 years
  • Dependent child: 10 years or until age 25 (whichever comes first, with some nuances)
  • Parent or grandparent: 20 years

These obligations do not end if your relationship breaks down, you divorce, or your income later drops.

Visa4you makes sure you fully understand the financial commitment before you sponsor.

How the Family Sponsorship Process Works

Process details vary by family type, but usually include two main parts filed together or in sequence:

1

Sponsorship Application (from the sponsor)

Proves you’re eligible to sponsor and can meet your undertaking.

2

Permanent Residence Application (from the applicant)

Shows your family member meets admissibility and relationship requirements.

Steps:

1

Confirm Eligibility & Choose the Right Stream

For partners: choose inland vs. outland depending on where they live and your circumstances.

For PGP: ensure you’re in the right intake and meet income tests.

2

Gather Documents & Proof of Relationship

Identity, status and background documents

For spouses/partners: proof of relationship.

For parents/grandparents: income evidence.

3

Submit the Application Package to IRCC

I Often online, following the latest IRCC checklists and guides.

4

Biometrics, Medicals and Additional Info

Applicants provide biometrics and medical exams, and may get requests for extra relationship proof or updated forms.

5

Decision & Landing as a Permanent Resident

If approved, family members receive COPR / PR visas and complete the landing process (either from inside or outside Canada).

Processing times vary widely (commonly 8–36 months, depending on category and country). With 2025 family class targets reduced and caps in some programs, well-prepared files are more important than ever.

2024–2025 Changes You Should Know About

Recent updates that affect family sponsorship Canada include:

  • Lower 2025–2026 Family Class targets IRCC plans fewer landings in spouses/partners/children and PGP, which may lead to longer waits and tighter scrutiny.
  • Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) restrictions rules for open work permits for spouses of workers/students have been narrowed, with more dependence on the principal’s TEER level and study program.
  • Parents & Grandparents Program 2025 intake – 10,000 applications, invitations from the 2020 pool only, started on 28 July 2025, with the Super Visa emphasized as an alternative.

Visa4you keeps on top of these shifts, so your plan reflects current rules, not last year’s headlines.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can usually sponsor your spouse or partner, dependent children, and through specific programs, your parents and grandparents. In limited cases you may sponsor orphaned siblings, nieces/nephews or grandchildren, or one extended relative if you have no other close family.

Processing times vary widely by category and country. Many spousal cases can be around a year, while parents and grandparents may take 2–4 years or more, especially with tighter targets.

For spouses and dependent children, there’s usually no formal minimum income, but you must still show you can support them. For parents and grandparents, you must meet specific income thresholds over several tax years and sign a long undertaking.

In many cases, yes, especially if they are in Canada and meet criteria for a spousal open work permit, but the rules around who qualifies have been tightened in 2024–2025 and interact with your own status and job type.

If you’re not selected in the PGP intake, you can still explore:

  • A Super Visa for longer-term visits,
  • Other economic immigration options for your parents (rare but possible in specific cases), or
  • Planning for future PGP rounds if IRCC reuses older pools.
