Skilled Worker Visa Canada
Express Entry & Provincial Nominee Pathways
When people refer to a skilled worker visa for Canada, they usually mean permanent residence through Express Entry or a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), rather than a temporary stay on a short-term work permit. These programs are designed for qualified professionals who can contribute to Canada’s economy and settle permanently with their families.

What is a Skilled Worker Visa?
Canada doesn’t have a single Skilled Worker Visa, it has several economic immigration programs that skilled workers can utilize to potentially receive permanent residence (PR):
- Express Entry programs
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) – for skilled workers with foreign work experience
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC) – for applicants with recent skilled work experience in Canada
- Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) – for workers in certain trade occupations
- Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP) – used by provinces to nominate skilled workers to meet local labour needs
All of the above can be described as Skilled Worker pathways, because they can lead to PR for skilled professionals and their families.
Express Entry – Core System for Skilled Worker Immigration
How does it work?
Express Entry is Canada’s online system that manages applications for three skilled worker programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP).
If you are eligible for one of the programs, an Express Entry profile can be set up. Based on the information in your profile, you will receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. Candidates are invited for a full PR application based on their CRS score, specific program or category draws.

Focus on Specific Target Categories:
- Healthcare
- STEM
- Trades
- Education
- French-speaking candidates
- Specialists with Canadian work experience
Visa4you supports you in optimizing your profile for both general and category-based draws.
Express Entry Programs
Federal Skilled Worker Program
The Federal Skilled Worker Program is Canada’s original points-based system for skilled professionals with foreign work experience who want to become permanent residents.
To qualify for FSW, you must:
- Meet the minimum requirements of the program
- Score at least 67/100 points on the FSW selection grid. This is based on your age, education, work experience, language, job offer, adaptability
- Be admissible and have enough settlement funds
Canadian Experience Class
The Canadian Experience Class program is focussed on candidates already in Canada or with recent Canadian work experience. These candidates already in Canada have a stronger protential to successfully settle in the country due to employment or study ties.
To qualify for CEC, you must:
- Have gained 1 year of full time skilled work experience in Canada recently
- Meet the required language proficience based on your occupation
- Be admissible to Canada
Federal Skilled Trade Program
The Federal Skilled Trade Program provides options for skilled trades persons to come to Canada to fill gaps in the labour market.
To qualify FST, you must:
- Have gained 2 years of high-skilled work experience in a specific trade-NOC code, based on certain sectors such as constuction, manufacturing, natural resources and agriculture
- Meet the required language proficience based on your occupation
- Have been offered a job offer (LMIA-approved) or Canadian Trade Certificate
- Be admissible to Canada
Provincial Nominee Programs Skilled Worker
The Provincial Nominee Program lets provinces and territories nominate skilled workers, graduates and sometimes entrepreneurs for PR when they meet local labour needs.
- Each province (except Quebec) runs its own PNP streams, many specifically for skilled workers with job offers or in-demand occupations.
- Some PNP streams are aligned with Express Entry (you get 600 extra CRS points if nominated).
- Others are base PNPs with a separate PR process after nomination.
Provinces actively adjust their streams, and in some cases suspend or review programs.
Visa4you will assess your Express Entry vs. PNP options, and provide an opinion on whether to target Express Entry or PNP based on your CRS, occupation and provincial preferences.
Are You Considered a "Skilled Worker"?
Generally, you’re in skilled worker territory if you:
- Have at least one year of continuous full-time (or equivalent part-time) paid work experience in a skilled occupation (NOC TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3)
- Hold a post-secondary qualification
- Can prove English and/or French language skilles
- Have no criminal or medical inadmissibility issues
Even if you do not meet all requirements, a PNP or
alternative federal pathway may still be available; the key is an accurate
profile assessment.

You need at least 67 points out of 100 on the FSW selection grid to be eligible, and then a competitive CRS score to be invited from the pool. The CRS cut-offs vary by draw (general, category-based, PNP, etc.).
Not always. Many people immigrate without a job offer through FSW or certain PNP streams, but a valid job offer or provincial nomination can significantly boost your CRS and chances of being invited.
Timelines vary based on:
- How quickly you obtain language tests and ECA
- How competitive your CRS is
- Draw patterns and processing times in a given year
Recent reports show Canada adjusting draws and categories frequently to manage targets, backlogs and labour needs, so there is no fixed guarantee, but Express Entry remains one of the faster PR routes once you’re invited.
